Director Of Communications & Special Events Job Description
We are looking for a highly-motivated, multi-tasking communicator and social media tech savvy with a passion in local government to work with our dynamic team.
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under administrative direction, the incumbent will develop, organize, and manage Village-wide communication efforts as well as identify and assist in the development and dissemination of appropriate communication projects, communication strategies, and oversee all mediums of Village communications, including the use of Cable TV, social media, and the official Village website.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This is a single incumbent, executive position with a wide scope of responsibilities to manage development of a Village-wide communications effort. The incumbent reports to the Village Manager and has significant responsibility in managing and directing a centralized public information and media program that serves as the official channel of communication between the Village and the public. This position indirectly oversees the daily operations of positions within the Village that provide support to the Communications and Special Events Department.
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.
- Plan and coordinate the Village’s strategic communications efforts, including but not limited to internal and external communications, public presentations, and commission meetings.
- Establish training resources designed to support the communications plan.
- Facilitate the preparation and dissemination of news releases regarding Village events, services and regulations in conjunction with city departments, coordinate media conferences, and arrange media coverage for Village special events.
- Oversees crisis communications, Everbridge system, and work with Police Dispatch to spread emergency information to residents.
- Critique and benchmark the development of Village communications, which include establishing a theme, working with related departments and mentoring employees and managers in the area of communications.
- Oversee and develop the production and distribution of a variety of information and marketing materials, such as, Village education/information videos, internal and external newsletters, communications provided to new residents and businesses, and video productions.
- Maintain contact with news media to assure accuracy of disseminated Village information and identify and correct reporting errors, and act as the media liaison.
- Create content for both print and Web, including the Village website, blog, brochures, and newsletter.
- Monitor and curate the Village's social media and online presence.
- Organize and direct promotional events.
- Recommend techniques to improve the Village's public image.
- Ensure that all promotional and marketing materials meet the Village's brand identity strategy.
- Identify and resolve any issues with promotional content in a timely and professional manner.
- Serve as point of contact for media and public inquiries.
- Assess and report on the effectiveness of communication strategies.
- Coordinate meetings, press conferences, and presentations.
- Oversee budget of Communications Department.
- Analyzes social media performance metrics, tools, trends, and develops and reports recommendations to ensure effectiveness of content and visibility.
- Serves as Staff liaison to the Heart of the Bay Task Force.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Thorough knowledge of the functions and organization of local government.
- Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Communications, English, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field.
- A minimum of 2-3 years of experience working in a marketing or communications position.
- Must have excellent writing and editing skills.
- Bilingual preferred
- Be able to communicate clearly and effectively.
- Ability to work independently, with little or no supervision, and under pressure with short deadlines.
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with other agencies, the public, and employees.
- Strong time-management and organizational skills.
- Possess a solid understanding of effective marketing techniques.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college.
- 1-2 years of experience in management of staff.
- Highly desirable experience: Logistics, Event management, Canva, Wordpress or website management, CRM experience (Sprout Social, Hootsuite), Eventbrite, Adobe Suite, etc.
- Village Manager at his discretion may choose to mitigate education requirements with experience.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $84,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year
